Ford Focus SVT

The U.S. 2002 model was a little different to the Euro model.
different yet still quite the same.
While the U.S. got the SVT, we got the
171bhp, 2.0 Focus ST-170.
and the
215bhp, 2.0 Focus RS.

gotta love U.S. lighting regs.

Ye’, we went from these in the Mk1 (early and late model).
to
The U.S. eventually got the indicators in the headlights much later.
But when they did, the early saloon Focus looked awful.
What the U.S. got on the right to the Euro ones on the left and bottom.

US and Euro spec Focus are totally different due to different crash standards and regional tastes in handling. The cooler Euro spec styling and stuff like that won’t fit.
These “global” vehicles have never really been truly “global” which is sad.

But other than the lighting regs on the Mk1, weren’t the Mk1 and later, the Mk3 Focus’ the same essentially?

The bumpers on the Mk1 were different, too:

I always forget about those bumpers. They look awful compared to non USDM ones.

This is the real story. What is that thing?

Rav4, Civic, Elantra, Dakota, Caravan or Astro conversion van. Probably.

In styling yes, under the skin not really.

The one on the right is not an “early” US sedan/saloon. The 1st-gen Focus sedan looked more or less like the US hatch, but with a somewhat awkward kink at the C-pillar:
The one in your picture is a US second-gen (really just a facelifted first-get). We never got the real 2nd-gen Focus (to our detriment). I’ve always hated the US 2nd-gen though, while the first-gen screams “I’m funky and fun!”, the facelift blandly states “aren’t you ashamed you couldn’t afford a Fusion”.

Yes, but, as stated, the second saloon is the first one with the indicators in the same headlight unit like the Euro ones and not as a separate unit.

I wondered if that was what you were going for, but it still doesn’t make sense to call it early to me. At least we are in agreement that it was awful.

Ye’, I was going for earliest integrated unit.
The large orange unit separate, but inward of the headlight in the grille (along with those orange side markers) stand out like sore thumbs.
In our pre-facelift and post-facelift Mk2, the indicators are more subdued with amber bulbs without large in your face orange lenses.
